Beatrice Anabel Gillen, age 92, of Assumption, Ohio, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2009 at Swanton Health Care & Retirement Center, where she resided for the past year. She was born December 16, 1916 in Mulberry, Michigan, Lenawee County, to E. John Fatchett and Lydia (Jacob) Fatchett. On November 12, 1938, she married Vincent John “Murph” Gillen. He preceded her in death in 1989.

Bea enjoyed playing cards, bingo, working jigsaw puzzles and gardening. As a farm wife, she was no stranger to hard work. Along with her husband, they raised steers, pigs and chickens, and farmed many acres. She was an excellent baker and homemaker. Bea’s family was her life and she will be sadly missed by all.

Bea was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Assumption and member of their Altar Rosary Society. She enjoyed helping with the monthly St. Vincent DePaul food distribution. She was past treasurer of the former St. Mary’s Cemetery Committee, a fifty-year member of the Catholic Knights of Ohio, participated in the Metamora Senior Citizens, and women’s euchre club.

Surviving are her children, Janet (Eldon) Meyer of Napoleon, OH, Carl (Becky) Gillen of Berkey, OH, and Luann (Brian) Barnaby of Berkey, OH. Also surviving are daughter-in-law, Jane Gillen of Swanton, OH; grandchildren, Jeff (Michele) Gillen, David (Candy) Gillen, Sandy (Bob) Gergich, Scott (Jennifer) Gillen, Sherri Meyer (Brent Short), Tim (Nichole) Meyer, Andrea Meyer, Andrew Barnaby (Kelly Koppenhofer), and Adrienne Barnaby, and 9 great-grandchildren. She was especially close to her nieces, Pat Hansen and Mary Anderson, and nephew, Mel Fatchett.

Besides her husband, Bea was preceded in death by her parents; son, Gale Gillen, and brothers, Elwyn Fatchett and Donald Fatchett.

Friends and family may visit Tuesday, February 24th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where a Scripture service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 25th, followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Assumption. Fr. Ron Schock will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity St. Vincent DePaul Society.
