Bea Altevogt took her final trip, to Jesus in Heaven, on Monday, November 10, 2014. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Arthur H. and Melba V. (Sonafrank) Altevogt on November 19, 1939, she graduated from South Side High School in 1957.
She began her career with Platka Export in Fort Wayne, which later became a division of Dana under the Dana World Trade in Toledo. She retired from Dana World as the Quality Control Manager at the end of May 2001 after 45 years in the international aftermarket business.
After retiring, she joined the YMCA, then Curves, enjoying the activities at both facilities until 2008. She also started scrapbooking after retirement, which introduced her to many people, most becoming wonderful friends. She became involved with the Swanton Library and Delphians, a study group. Playing cards was another of her pastimes, belonging to two bridge clubs and the Society Crap card club. Joining Red Hats added another outlet for fun, where she eventually became a Co-Queen Mum. Bea always wanted to travel and she found a kindred spirit in Laura Hanzi. They made many wonderful trips together: the Baltic; the Caribbean, including the Panama Canal; Italy and Greece; Hawaii; Australia, New Zealand; and Figi.
With no immediate family in the Toledo area, Shirley Oberneder, one of her "other sisters", and her other family "adopted " her, becoming Aunt Bea. Many holidays were enjoyed as part of this family. Bea was blessed with many wonderful friends, too many to name here, but you know who you are. Once she was diagnosed with cancer, she had this wonderful support system that carried her through many years.
Surviving are her sister, Margaret Colchin and brother, John (Rynelle) Altevogt; two nieces, Rosanne Colchin and Cheri (Tony) Pettus; two nephews, Michael (Bobbi Jo) and Chris (Amber) Altevogt; 13 great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 14th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where services celebrating her life will begin at 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Swanton Public Library or the Swanton Food Bank.
