Andrew Alfred Clarke, age 82, of Putnam Lake, New York, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009 at his daughter's home in Swanton, Ohio. Son of Patrick Joseph Clarke (Bailleborough, Ire) and Bridgit Farley Clarke (Lurgan, Ire), he was born November 27, 1926 in Manhattan, NY. He was married 54 years to Marilyn (Sprauer) Clarke, who preceded him in death in 2003. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Bernard, and sister, Anna Curtin.
Mr. Clarke retired from the FDNY in 1990, having been stationed for 31 years at Engine 94, Seneca Ave, in the Bronx. He was a member of the Emerald Society and the Holy Name Society. He was a 29-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
He served in the U.S. Army, enlisting in 1945, in The 4th Armored Division during the Occupation of Japan and the Philippines. He was a Life Member of the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division Assoc. Mr. Clark was active in the VFW and the American Legion, and was Past Commander of Putnam Lake VFW Post 9257.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed saltwater fishing. He had an appreciation and love for gardening.
Mr. Clarke is survived by four children, Paula (Sal) Ellinger, Andrew N. Clarke, Theresa (Michael) Hadden, and Patrick (Mary) Clarke; three sisters, Mary Kelly, Josephine Russell, and Bernadette Tombline; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Church in Putnam Lake, NY. Interment will follow at the ST. Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery in Brewster, NY. Family may receive friends on Friday, October 23, 2009 from 2-4pm & 6-9pm at The Beecher Funeral Home, 1 Putnam Ave. Brewster, NY. 10509- (845)-279-3615.
