Alice Mae Doyle passed into eternal life on January 11, 2022, after a short illness, She was born on November 26, 1921, to Ora Davis and Mary (Kirsch) Davis VanWormer in Lenawee Co. Michigan. In 1940, Alice graduated from Metamora High School and married James Doyle on her birthday that year.
Being a farmer's daughter and a farmer's wife suited Alice well as she loved helping with crops and livestock, She farmed with a team of horses and then tractors and often reminisced about threshing days on her grandfather's and uncle's farms just north of Metamora, Ohio. However Alice's true passion was cooking, whether it was family dinners, restaurants, school cafeteria, dinners at Metamora United Methodist Church or her catering business. Jim helped out with the catering, and Potato salad and pies were two of Alice's specialties. Card playing was a favorite activity, and she enjoyed euchre or rummy with anyone she could find to play. "Alice the Great" taught the great grandchildren to play rummy. Alice and Jim enjoyed fishing perch on Lake Erie, and nobody fried up big platters of fish like Alice did! The Doyles wintered for many years in DeLeon Springs, FL.
Left to cherish Alice's memory are her five children, Gary (Rita Aller) Doyle of Metamora, OH, Sharon (Chuck) Sylvester of Deland, FL, Patricia (Norman) Vandenbusche of Blissfield, MI, Gloria (Conroy) Gedeon of Granada Hills, CA and Dawn (Ronnie) Wahl of Manchester, MI. She will be missed by seventeen grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren and a myriad of special nieces, nephews and friends including close friend, Theresa Farnsel. Preceding Alice in death were her parents and step-dad, Arthur VanWormer, her loving husband of 49 years, grandsons Kenneth Napierala and Troy Sylvester and her siblings Evelyn Iffland Hatfield, Marjorie Rohrback, Barbara Miller, Patricia Davis and Jack Davis and their spouses.
A 100th birthday party was enjoyed by Alice and her family and friends in late October. It was decided to have her Celebration of Life while Alice could be there! Per Alice's wishes, her service will be private. Memorials in Alice's memory may wish to consider the Metamora United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 288 in Metamora or the Metamora Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 174 in Metamora.
