Alex Barba, 82, of Swanton, Ohio, died Friday, April 3, 2009, after an extended illness. Following graduation from Metamora High School in 1944, he served proudly in the US Navy on the USS Topeka. Alex was a member of the Catholic War Veterans in Assumption where he was one of the last surviving charter members of Post 306. One of his regrets was that his illness prevented him from traveling to the recently opened World War II memorial in Washington D.C.
He worked at Jeep Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 1986, where he served as a UAW steward. Alex was a staunch Democrat. He loved Ohio State football, as well as the Cleveland Browns and Indians.
Alex was a devoted husband and father. He married Angelene Loeffler on October 21, 1944. They were married for 53 years until her death in 1998. He is survived by their six children, Diane (Victor) Glanz of Sylvania, OH, Catherine (Robert) Nadal of North Tustin, CA, Alan (Gail) Barba of Blissfield, MI, Mary Lee (Russell) Thurman of Powell Butte, OR, John (Liz) Barba of Swanton, OH, and Barbara (Ray) Urbanowski of North Baltimore, MI., and beloved friend Bernice Schmuhl of Maumee. He had 15 grandchildren, Dr. Wendy Clinger, Kurt Wagner, Kelly Barba Herr, Carly Green, Brent Storey, Brian Storey, Matt Thurman, Lance Thurman, Alex Barba, Scott Barba, Rodman Clement, Tony Urbanowski, Nick Urbanowski, Lisa Blanton, and Sara Jakobuss and 9 great-granchildren.
He was preceded in death his brothers, Frank, Paul, Ted and Richard Barba, and sister, Susie Ries.
Friends and family may visit Sunday, April 5th from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where a Catholic War Veterans service will be held at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Scripture service. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 6th, followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Assumption. Fr. Ron Schock will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors.
